Stage 3: The
Screen
|
Step 1:
Create a new layer above the ClickWheel layers, yet below the
Shine layer. Change your foreground
color to #393c3c, select the rounded Rectangle Tool and change the corner
radius
to 5px.
Now create a dark rectangle to represent the dark parts of the LCD screen
(i.e. as in the image opposite).
Once you have done this, create yet another layer directly on top of your
rounded rectangle layer and, using the Rectangle Tool (NOT the rounded Rectangle Tool),
draw a white rectangle. With the shape layer still active, choose Layer > Layer Style >
Gradient Overlay from the main menu, set the angle to 0 degrees, and
alter the gradient so that it resembles the example below: |
|
 |
|
Step 2:
Create yet another new layer. Use the Rectangle Tool to draw the shape
representing the titlebar. With the shape layer still active, choose Layer > Layer Style >
Blending Options from the main menu, and alter the drop shadow
settings according to the image on the left, and your gradient overlay
(with angle set to 90 degrees)
to the gradient settings below...
|
|
 |
|
Step
3:
Slowly getting there! Create a new layer, select the polygon tool (3
sides), and change your foreground color to #5fb8df. Make a small triangle
about the size of the play button triangle. With the
shape layer still active, choose Layer > Layer Style > Inner Glow
from the main menu, and change the
settings to the ones on the left: |
|
Step
4:
Make yet another new layer. Select the Polygon Lasso Tool, ensure
Anti-Alias is unchecked, and draw the shape of a
battery (NB. This is where a referral photo would come in handy!!!). When
your shape is complete, Edit > Fill the selection with a solid black
color. Now choose Layer > Layer Style > Blending
Options from the main menu, and add a gradient overlay (angle set
to 90 degrees) and stroke,
with the settings changed as follows: |
|

 |
|
Step
5:
This looks good, but the grey part of the battery is green. To fix that you
need create a new layer above your battery shape with the blending mode
set to 'Saturation'. Get out your Pencil Tool with a 1px
height/width brush (100% opacity), and change foreground color to black. Now color the head of the battery
in the new layer. Duplicate this layer when you are finished (Layer >
Duplicate Layer), set the blending mode to 'Multiply', and
lower the opacity to around 35%. If you
are lucky and have followed my instructions correctly, you should have a
battery that resembles my example on the left. |
|
Step
6:
For the rest of your time you should add as many additional details as you
desire. Progress-sliders, timer text, and preview pictures are easy
enough to design now that you know the basics of creating them.
When you are finished, make both the body-shine and shine
layers visible, select the shine layer, and lower the layer
opacity of the screen shine to suit your own individual tastes.
In my example I used an opacity of 15%. I also lowered
the shine iPod-body a little too, to suit the lighting and mood.
And there you go... one cool-looking iPod! Have fun designing, and
don't forget to let me know if you do anything extra funky or cool with your
creations! :D |
